Endocrine and Metabolic Disorders: Applying For Disability

If you’ve been diagnosed with hyperglycemia or another endocrine disorder and your daily life has been significantly impacted as a result, then you might need to consider making a disability claim.

What constitutes an endocrine condition that qualifies for social security disability benefits is a person’s ability to function due to a hormone imbalance. The extent that your body can be affected by this disparity is far reaching. From your mental health and metabolism to digestion and blood pressure levels, an endocrine condition can easily keep you from work, social events or even just completing the most basic household tasks.

    Endocrine And Metabolic Disorders

While certain medications and diet can be helpful toward restoring this imbalance, those with a severe enough variance can still struggle to function. Whether you’re producing too much of a specific hormone (hyperfunction) or significantly less (hypofunction), this imbalance can have significant impacts on how you’re able to perform daily activities.

Can You Get Disability For High Blood Pressure And Diabetes?

In short, it’s possible to get your claim approved with endocrine conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure, however, medical evidence and a diagnosis is what will strengthen your case for approval.

Claims that are evaluated for social security disability must be a diagnosis within the pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal or pancreas. Other systems affected by an endocrine condition are also taken into consideration when applying for disability.

The Social Security Administration’s Blue Book provides several examples of endocrine disorders that could qualify for disability. Just some of the these examples include

    1. Pituitary Gland Disorders –
      1. One example of this disorder includes a hypofunctioning gland, which can affect how the body is able to break down water and electrolytes within the kidneys. In turn, this can lead to other endocrine disorders such as diabetes and leave the body facing recurring states of dehydration.
    2. Thyroid Gland Disorders –
      1. Thyroid disorders directly affect the body’s nervous system and metabolism. This leaves those affected with this type of endocrine disorder, facing difficulties losing or gaining weight, managing blood pressure levels, and enduring mood disorders such as heightened anxiety or depression.
    3. Adrenal Gland Disorders –
      1. The adrenal glands are also far reaching in how much of the body they can affect. From blood pressure and calcium levels, to our mental health and metabolism, hormones that are directly affected in this gland can lead to a number of other health conditions. These include heart failure, osteoporosis, bone fractures, mood disorders, weight loss and hypertension.
    4. Diabetes Mellitus And Pancreatic Disorders –
      1. Insulin affects most of our body’s metabolism and digestive functionality. When too much or too little is produced, it’s not only disruptive to our energy levels but potentially life threatening to our most important organs. There are two types of Diabetes Mellitus (DM) that a person can be diagnosed with and both share their challenges in self-management.
      2. Type one DM is often diagnosed in early childhood, treated with daily insulin doses, and continues into adulthood. Type 2 DM is diagnosed during adulthood and is not controlled with a daily insulin dose. Often dietary changes and exercise can help those affected by Type 2, but due to the lack of natural insulin production, other endocrine conditions like hypoglycemia can make management even more challenging.
    5. Hyperglycemia and Hyponatremia –
      1. Both of these conditions show an imbalance in the body’s blood glucose levels, which can affect our physical and mental health. They leave the body susceptible to infection and present significant risks to neurovascular and cognitive impairments as well.
